This special issue is contextualized in the Asia Pacific region where some developments in summative and formative assessments are illustrative of the important role for assessment as part of learning. From national assessment systems as evidenced by research conducted in China and Vietnam, through to classroom assessment practices as apparent in the studies in Hong Kong and Australia, a learning orientation for assessment becomes evident.
