Cuba's academic performance in comparative perspective

Carnoy and Marshall examine cross-national testing data collected in the late 1990s, data that include information on achievement, family background, and classroom/school conditions of third and fourth graders. They suggest that family social capital and collective social capital are each important in explaining academic achievement differences among countries, especially when contexts vary significantly. They also estimate the influence of context on student achievement and distinguish this influence from the effects of students' family backgrounds and school resource. (UMI]
